Know the words before you trade

Balance
The amount in your trading account from deposits, withdrawals and closed trades, ignoring any trades that are still open.
Drawdown
The fall in an account from its highest value to a later low, usually shown as a percentage.
Equity
Your account balance plus or minus the floating profit or loss on all open trades. It is what your account would be worth if you closed everything now.
Leverage
Borrowed exposure from your broker that lets you control a position much larger than your deposit. It magnifies both profits and losses.
Lot
A standardised trade size. One standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency; a mini lot is 10,000 and a micro lot is 1,000.
Margin
The amount of your own money a broker sets aside as a deposit to keep a leveraged position open.
Pip
The standard unit for measuring how far an exchange rate has moved. For most currency pairs a pip is 0.0001; for pairs quoted in Japanese yen it is 0.01.
Spread
The difference between the buy (ask) price and the sell (bid) price of a currency pair. It is the main trading cost on most forex accounts.
Stop loss
An order that automatically closes a trade at a set price to limit your loss if the market moves against you.
Swap
Interest paid or charged for holding a position open overnight, based on the interest rate difference between the two currencies.
Take profit
An order that automatically closes a trade once it reaches a chosen profit level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick, honest answers to what Tanzanian traders ask us most.

What is forex trading?

Forex (foreign exchange) trading means buying one currency and selling another at the same time, hoping to profit from a change in the exchange rate. Most individuals trade online through a broker, using leverage, and never handle the actual currency. Our beginner guide explains it step by step.

Is forex trading legal in Tanzania?

Many Tanzanians trade forex online through international brokers that accept clients from Tanzania. The Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA) regulates capital markets in Tanzania and the Bank of Tanzania oversees foreign exchange matters, so check their latest guidance before opening a live account. We explain the landscape in our Tanzania forex guide, but this is not legal advice.

How much money do I need to start trading forex in Tanzania?

Some brokers let you open an account from as little as 1-10 USD. How much you actually need depends on your strategy and how much you can afford to lose. You can start learning with no money at all on a free demo account. Read how much money you need to start.

Can I deposit with M-Pesa, Airtel Money or other mobile money?

It depends on the broker. Some brokers accept deposits in TZS through mobile money, and others can be funded through peer-to-peer (P2P) services or local payment agents. Always check the payment methods in the broker's own cashier before you deposit. Each broker profile on this site lists the payment methods we know of.

What is a peer-to-peer (P2P) deposit, and is it safe?

With P2P you buy or sell trading funds directly with another person, usually paying or receiving TZS by mobile money or bank transfer, while the platform holds the funds until both sides confirm. Use only the broker's official P2P service or a well-known exchange, never send money to strangers outside the platform, and start with a small amount.

How do I withdraw my profits to Tanzania?

Most brokers send withdrawals back to the method you deposited with, such as mobile money, P2P, card, e-wallet or bank transfer. Expect an identity check before your first withdrawal. Test the process early with a small amount. Our guide on deposits and withdrawals from Tanzania has more detail.

Which forex broker is best for beginners in Tanzania?

There is no single best broker for everyone. Look for regulation you can verify, a low minimum deposit, a free demo account, a platform you find easy to use and deposit and withdrawal methods that work for you in Tanzania. Use our broker comparison to compare brokers side by side.

How do I know if a forex broker is regulated?

Find the licence number on the broker's website, then search for it on the regulator's own register (for example the FCA, CySEC, FSCA or ASIC). Check which company your account will actually be opened with, because many brokers run several entities with different licences.

What is a demo account and should I use one?

A demo account is a free practice account with virtual money and real market prices. Yes, use one first: practise for several weeks with the same position sizes you would use with real money. See how to open a demo account.

Can I trade forex on my phone?

Yes. MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and most brokers' own apps work on Android and iPhone, and run well on a normal mobile data connection. Set a stop loss on every trade, because it is easy to make mistakes on a small screen.

What is leverage, and why is it risky?

Leverage lets you control a position much larger than your deposit, for example 1:100 means 1 USD controls 100 USD. It magnifies losses exactly as much as gains, and is the main reason most retail traders lose money. Read our lesson on leverage.

What are pips, lots and spreads?

A pip is the unit used to measure price moves (0.0001 on most pairs). A lot is the trade size (1.00 = 100,000 units, 0.01 = 1,000). The spread is the difference between the buy and sell price, and it is a cost on every trade. The forex glossary explains every term in plain English.

How long does it take to learn forex trading?

You can learn the basics in a few days with our free 18-lesson beginner course. Becoming consistent takes months of practice on a demo account, a written trading plan and careful record keeping. There is no shortcut.

Can I make a living from forex trading?

Very few people do. Most retail traders lose money, and results are never guaranteed. Treat trading as a high-risk activity, not a salary, and never trade with money you need for rent, school fees or your business.

Is forex trading risky?

Yes. Leveraged trading can cause losses that exceed your deposit with some brokers, and most retail traders lose money over time. Use small position sizes, a stop loss on every trade and only money you can genuinely afford to lose.

Do I have to pay tax on forex profits in Tanzania?

Tax depends on your personal circumstances. Ask the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) or a qualified tax adviser, and keep records of your deposits, withdrawals and trading results. We do not give tax advice.

How do I spot forex scams?

Be very careful with anyone who promises fixed or guaranteed profits, offers to trade your account for you, asks for your login or password, or asks you to pay a "fee" before you can withdraw. Deposit only through the broker's official website or app, never to personal numbers on WhatsApp or Telegram.

What is the best time to trade forex in Tanzania?

The market is open 24 hours a day on weekdays. It is usually busiest, with the tightest spreads on major pairs, when the London and New York sessions overlap, roughly 4pm to 7pm East Africa Time. Be careful around major news releases, when prices can jump.

Is the beginner course really free?

Yes. All lessons, guides, the glossary and the calculators are free to read without an account. A free account only adds progress tracking, quizzes and saved articles.

Does Forex Trading in Tanzania give investment advice?

No. Everything on this site is education and general information, not financial advice. We may earn a commission when you open an account through some broker links, which never changes what we write. Read our affiliate disclosure.
